A Holistic Approach to Game Design

Hi, I'm Amerigo. I'm a game designer based in Italy, and I've spent the last few years working on PC, console, and mobile titles. Most of my work sits in systems, combat, and encounter design.

The word I use for my approach is holistic. I think good design only happens when you consider every part of the game (mechanics, economy, encounters, UI, audio, art direction) together. A new feature or a balance tweak is never local. It ripples through everything else, and a big part of the job is figuring out where it lands before you ship it.

Outside of work I'm a massive nerd, which I'd argue is required for anyone in this industry. My hobbies include tabletop games, videogames, drawing poorly, playing guitar, and acting.

I also believe you have to stay a student to stay good at this, so I'm always taking courses in my spare time. Right now I'm working through:

  • The Game Design Systems course from GameDesignSkills.com
  • Unreal Engine's official Game Design course
  • A C++ for Unreal course, so I can build my own tools
